Siddharth Giri/ 16th May, 2020/ Dropshipping

Shopify and WooCommerce, These two names come to our mind whenever we want to start a dropshipping/eCommerce store and choosing one of them are very difficult because both platforms have their own advantages and disadvantages. So today, I will try to explain which platform is better to start a dropshipping store.

Shopify and WooCommerce are the two most popular e-commerce platform in the world, which helps to start an online store without any help from professionals. But the fact is you cannot choose both, you have to select any one of them. In this article, We will discuss which one should you choose and why?

Want to skip this detailed review? Then Here’s a small comparison between both.

Shopify

Shopify is an all-in-one platform, which handles everything including hosting, security, payment, etc. So, If anything goes wrong in your store then you can directly contact Shopify support for help.

WooCommerce

But, In WooCommerce, you have to combine multiple platforms/services to create a dropshipping store. For example,

  • WordPress
  • WooCommerce Plugin
  • Hosting Provider
  • Payment Gateway
  • SSL Certificate Provider
  • Theme Provider

Apart from all these things you have to install a few more plugins for SEO and other stuff. So, If anything goes wrong in your store then first you have to determine, which platform/service is causing the problem then you have to contact their customer support for help.

Overview: Shopify vs WooCommerce

What is Shopify?

Shopify is an eCommerce platform that allows you to create an online store without any help from professionals. In Short, You don’t need any skill to start a dropshipping store using Shopify.

What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is a plugin that helps you to convert a normal WordPress blog/website into an eCommerce store. But, You need to have a little bit of technical knowledge.

Price: Shopify vs WooCommerce

The biggest difference between both the platforms is price. On the one hand, Shopify is a subscription-based tool/service, which charges you fixed monthly fee depending on your plan selection. On the other hand, WordPress Software and WooCommere Plugin both are free but the problem is that you have to purchase your own hosting plan and SSL Certificate to use WordPress and WooCommerce.

Here’s a Table To Explain The Price Difference

Platform Hosting SSL Certificate Domain
Shopify Logo $29 / Month Included in The Plan $9 / Year
WooCommerce Logo $1 – $35+ / Month $0 – $100+ / Year $9 / Year

As you can see in the above table, you have to pay a minimum $29 / Month to start a dropshipping store using Shopify but in WooCommerce, monthly payment depends on your Hosting type selection. For example, Shared hosting costs between $1 – $15, VPS Costs between $50 – 150, etc.

GoDaddy is cheapest among all big hosting providers because GoDaddy WordPress Hosting Plan costs only $1 / Month for new customers and you’ll also get a free domain name on a yearly plan and If you won’t store any sensitive payment information on your store then you can use Let’s Encrypt Free SSL for security.

So, you just need $1 to start a dropshipping store using WooCommerce but the fact is GoDaddy WordPress Hosting Plan cannot handle so much traffic or visitors. It’s good for starting a store but not good for the long run.

If you’re serious about your dropshipping business then I won’t recommend you to use GoDaddy instead you can use SiteGround or Bluehost, both hosting providers offer specialized WooCommerce Hosting Plans.

SiteGround plans start from $3.95 / Month, which comes with 10 GB storage and Bluehost plans start from $6.95 / Month, which comes with 100 GB storage and $50 marketing credit. And, Both plans are good enough to start a basic WooCommerce store.

You can clearly see that WooCommerce is very cheaper than Shopify.

Design: Shopify vs WooCommerce

A Dropshipping store needs to have a great responsive design, If your site doesn’t have a good design then people won’t buy from you.

Shopify and WordPress(WooCommerce) both platforms give you an option to choose a theme for your store. Shopify offers more than 50 themes, which are professionally designed for the store. Obviously, Shopify has very fewer themes compared to WordPress but all themes are specially designed for an eCommerce store.

Shopify Design

Ten themes are free and rest will cost you between $140 – $200. All themes will allow you to easily customize the look and feel of your dropshipping store. Shopify makes it very easy to customize all the design like colors, header, footer, image, etc. Shopify also allows you to add sections like Slideshow, Featured Product, Map, Custom Content, etc.

Unlike Shopify, WordPress gives you an option to choose from thousands of WooCommerce supported theme to create a dropshipping store with great visual quality.

WooCommerce Design

In addition, You can also use drag and drop website builder plugin, which makes very easy to customize the look and design of the website but the disadvantage is that not all themes and plugins are free, sometimes you have to pay to use the service. Also, If you want more control then you can create a child theme and modify the theme’s file to customize the design as per your requirement.

WooCommerce is the clear winner when it comes to design and customization.

Easy of Use: Shopify vs WooCommerce

Both platforms have almost similar user interface. You can access anything from the left sidebar of the dashboard and you don’t need any design or site-building skills in order to get through it but let me explain what makes Shopify better.

Easy of Use Shopify

Shopify is a fully hosted platform which means you don’t need to install, manage, or update any software. You also don’t need to worry about security, performance, backups, and compatibility issues. Once you complete the initial signup wizard, you will get access to the main dashboard. Shopify’s user interface is specially designed for an eCommerce store because Shopify is eCommerce only platform, which means you’ll only see options related to your store in your dashboard.

But As I said earlier, you have to combine multiple platforms/services to create a store using WooCommerce, which means first you have to install WordPress on your host then you have to install WooCommerce plugin and complete the setup then you’ll see lots of menus along with WooCommerce menu.

Easy of Use WooCommerce

Also, you have to update WordPress and Plugins, keep a regular backup, optimize the performance of your website and the biggest disadvantages of using plugins are that it decreases the performance of your website and whenever you’ll install a new plugin, each new plugin will add a new menu to your dashboard.

However, WooCommerce gives you full control, which means you can customize it as per your requirement and you can also add plugins to increase the functionality of WooCommerce.

Shopify is way better than WooCommerce when it comes to ease of use.

Features: Shopify vs WooCommerce

Both the platforms have all the features, which you need to start and run an eCommerce / dropshipping store but the difference is, Shopify gives you all the features out of the box while in WooCommerce, you have to find a plugin to enable whatever feature you need.

However, WooCommerce gives you full control over your website and its data, which means you can do whatever you want to do in your WooCommerce store but in Shopify, You can do only those things which Shopify allows you to do.

Here’s a Table To Explain The Difference

Shopify Logo WooCommerce Logo
Unlimited products. Unlimited products.
Automatic Backup, Updates, etc… You have to do it manually.
Hosting Included. You have to purchase own Hosting.
Unlimited file storage. Storage Depends on Your Hosting Plan.
Free SSL Certificate. You can use Let’s Encrypt Free SSL, Which isn’t recommended.
24/7 Customer Support Via Email, Chat, and Phone. Customer Support via Forum or Ticket.
Embedded Oberlo integration for Dropshipping. Dropshipping Via Plugin.
Multiple languages. Multiple languages via Plugin.
You can do only those things which Shopify allows you to do. You can do whatever you want to do.
Shopify controls your store/website data. You have complete control over your data.
More than 50+ Themes including 10 Free Themes. More than thousands of themes available via WordPress.

Both platforms are good to start a dropshipping business but Shopify is better for drop shippers because of Oberlo. Oberlo allows you to find products, Auto-Ship Orders, etc.

Shopify Oberlo

Oberlo helps you to find and add products directly into your Shopify store that you can start selling right away. And, when you sell something via your dropshipping store, just order it on Oberlo and you’ll never have to package or ship the products. Oberlo will do this for you.

Shopify is the better dropshipping platform than WooCommerce.

Support: Shopify vs WooCommerce

WooCommerce is nowhere close to Shopify when it comes to customer support. Shopify customers can contact customer care specialist at any time, 24/7 via phone, email or live chat in case they have any issues or queries. Apart from that, customers can also visit Shopify’s knowledge base section to find the answer to common user questions and problems.

WooCommerce also offers a similar knowledge base section but sometimes you need expert advice and the problem is that WooCommerce doesn’t offer 24/7 support facility similar to Shopify. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t find solutions to your problems. You can contact the WooCommerce support team through the WordPress Forum or You can create a ticket to get the solution.

So, I can say that 24/7 Customer Support make Shopify better than WooCommerce.

Conclusion: Shopify vs WooCommerce

Shopify and WooCommerce both platforms are great to build an eCommerce / dropshipping store. Selection of one platform depends on your budget, skills, and preference.

  • Choose Shopify, If You can afford the monthly fee, want to launch your store as quickly as possible, want 24/7 customer support and don’t want to waste your time in the maintenance of your store.
  • Choose WooCommerce, If Your budget is very low, want full control over your store, can survive without 24/7 customer support and can handle the technical work.
